Crossing the Thai Border at Koh Kong / Hat Lek
The Hat Lek / Cham Yeam (Koh Kong) border crossing is officially open from 7.00 am until 20.00 pm. This border crossing is notorious for over-charging by the Cambodian officials. The best advice is to obtain a valid visa from an embassy or an e-visa online before crossing here unless you are willing to pay 1,200 Baht – 1,500 Baht ($ 40.00 – $ 50.00) for your $ 25.00 visa. Occasionally on the Thai side a urine test is required to check for recent drug abuse.
Currently there is no direct bus services between Sihanoukville and destinations in Thailand. If you buy a ‘thru-ticket’ you will have to walk through the border and change buses. You will be expected to show your ticket for each part of the journey so don’t discard it until you reach your final destination.
Whether coming from or going to Bangkok, Pattaya or Koh Chang you will pass through Trat bus station in southeastern Thailand. Buses from Bangkok and Pattaya terminate here and onward travel is by minivan. The cost from Trat to the border is 120 Baht and the journey takes 1 hour. The minivans leave when full so there is often a half hour or so wait for enough customers to arrive. If you are in a hurry you can negotiate a price with the driver to leave immediately.
Taxis coming from Thailand will drop you right at the Thai border post and will often wait 50m up the road for a return fare. If there are no taxis you can hire a minivan to take you to Trat from where you can arrange onward travel.
